
Research overwhelmingly supports the positive impact of exercise on individuals navigating cancer, both during and after treatment, with Pilates standing out as a valuable low-impact modality. Pilates and other movement-based exercises offer a multifaceted approach to cancer treatment support. By reducing cancer-related fatigue (CRF), exercise, including Pilates, helps individuals regain energy and improve physiological function. Furthermore, exercise enhances overall quality of life, encompassing physical and psychological well-being, fostering social engagement, and improving physical functioning. In breast cancer survivors, Pilates can aid in lymphedema management by promoting lymphatic drainage. Mental health benefits are also significant, as exercise can alleviate anxiety and depression, and contribute to improved mood and self-esteem. Through gentle movement and increased flexibility, Pilates can effectively manage pain and promote better sleep quality. Moreover, exercise plays a crucial role in preserving physical function by maintaining and improving muscle strength, range of motion, and overall physical capacity, making daily activities easier to manage. Pilates can improve cardiovascular function and lung capacity, which are vital during and after cancer treatment. Preoperative exercise programs have shown to reduce postoperative complications and shorten hospital stays, particularly for lung cancer patients. Emerging evidence suggests that exercise may even enhance the effectiveness of some cancer treatments.
